Meet Purgatory Pie Press artists Dikko Faust & Esther K Smith at a reception for their exhibit Purgatory Pie Press: Magic Books & Paper Toys. Faust started the Press in 1977 in Wisconsin. Since 1980, this husband and wife team have operated out of New York City focusing on making books with traditional and experimental techniques. They collaborate with other artists, writers, wood and metal typefaces, and even Big Publishing to make letterpress limited editions and trade books.
Purgatory Pie Press has had solo exhibitons at the rare book libraries in London’s Victoria and Albert Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Their editions have been shown at galleries and museums internationally, and are housed in the permanent collections of Museum of Modern Art, The Whitney, and the National Gallery of Art. The Press has also had solo exhibitions at Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), Harvard University, and San Francisco’s Center for the Book.
The exhibit will include: real type letterpress limited edition collaborative artist books, posters, coasters, postcards, PurgaToys-- PLUS examples from the Random House books including typographic proofs from the covers and display pages they designed and proofed on the letterpress for those publications.
