February 3, 2012 | Elsi Vassdal Ellis exhibit at Sandy

BAG member Elsi Vassdal Ellis has a one-person show at 23 Sandy Gallery in Portland February 3- March 10, 2012.  Here is what gallery owner Laura Russell has to say about this amazing artist :

You may remember Elsi Vassdal Ellis from our most recent book arts show, "Uncommon Threads". Her two books in the show were smash hits and both titles sold out. Elsi holds a very distinguished record here at 23 Sandy: she has been juried into every single juried book arts show we have produced since we opened nearly five years ago. She even won the "Gallery Choice Award" for our "Pop-up Now"show. We are thrilled to honor her with a solo show of her thought-provoking work.

Elsi Vassdal Ellis teaches design production and book arts at Western Washington University. She established EVE Press in 1983 she has produced over 95 editions and 120 unique books employing a variety of reproduction techniques and materials. Her work is permanently housed in many public collections including the National Museum of Women in the Arts, New York City Public Library, Ruth and Marvin Sackner Archive of Concrete and Visual Poetry, Grabhorn Collection in the San Francisco Public Library, and Arts of the Book Collection in the Yale University Library.  The University of Washington Libraries owns all Elsi's edition work and several one-of-a-kinds--over 65 pieces.

April 20, 2010 | Jane Cunningham honored

Founding BAG member, printer and binder Jane Cunningham as been in the national news for her service as a WASP (Women Airforce Service Pilots) during World War II.  She posthumously received the Congressional Gold Medal in a ceremony at the Capitol on March 10, among the approximately 1,100 who were the first U.S. women military pilots.  Of these, three hundred are still alive.  Some of us remember the miniature insignia/wings that Jane always wore on a neck chain!

The WASP flew non-combat, military missions in the U.S. including ferrying planes and towing aerial targets.  They were considered to be civilians but were finally awarded veteran status in 1977.

The Congressional Gold Medal has existed since the American Revolution and is the highest honor that Congress can give to a civilian or group of civilians for distinguished achievements and contributions.  It was awarded to the Navajo Code Talkers in 2000 and to the Tuskegee Airmen in 2006.

Well done, Jane!

Jane was known for her enthusiasm, hard work and willingness to try anything.  She was a valued member of the Book Arts Guild for many years and we thank Margery Hellmann for providing this tribute.
