Why books? with Pat Hodson

Please join us to meet artist Pat Hodson, based in Sheffield, UK. Her talk will outline how she stumbled into making books in the mid 1990's, after working with wax resist on cloth for around 15 years. She’ll show the different influences which inspired or changed her work, such as continual experiment with different materials, cross media collaborations, and computer technology. How digital imagery, rather than replacing hand applied color and marks became part of the process, opening up new possibilities; adding another layer of complexity to the work.

In the mid 60's Pat Hodson studied fine art in Liverpool before moving to Sheffield. Then followed a period of experiment with different textile media. From the mid 1970’s her work became centered around liquid dye color on cloth - using wax as resist. I became increasingly involved with investigating the unique qualities of dye color on cloth through overlaying washes of dye. This led her to explore the idea of suspending time. I was also concerned with the way dye fades or changes with time, and saw the potential of the book form for protecting colour from light, and inevitable change.

Pat Hodson has exhibited nationally since the 1970’s, and internationally from 1992. She was awarded travel Burseries from the Arts council for several of these; China in 1997, Japan in 2002, Finland in 2005 and U.S. in 2007.
