On-line presentation of the Book Arts Guild
POST PRESENTATION UPDATE
Here is the recording of Jan's presentation: https://youtu.be/vrW9uZaiN_M
Jan Dove is a California-raised artist with an MFA in printmaking from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. In the years since art school she has grown suspicious of the rectangle and now spends much of her studio time subverting the two-dimensional with artist books. Same stuff, only more playful - and challenging - and personally rewarding.
In this presentation Jan will show and tell on her latest book, Flight Data. It grew from thinking about the struggle and the arc of a lifespan. Using her photographs and writings to enlarge on the metaphor of rising and falling, this book took on the mechanisms of the Jacob’s Ladder, a putative child’s toy. It seemed particularly appropriate because when riffing on life/death, beginnings/endings and other such solemn matters, it perhaps is best to unpack your yo-yo.
After working for years in the San Francisco Bay Area, Jan moved to the Olympic Peninsula in the 2015 where she set up shop and life in a little nook halfway between an organic grocery and an international ferry terminal, which is kind of a good metaphor for her art (an amalgam of natural elements and a worldly perspective).
Here she experiments with materials, images, structures, technology, and ideas. You may have seen the video she made for the BAG show and tell earlier this year. (Watch again here)
Jan's work has been shown all over the world and is held in collections in Washington, California, Wyoming, Illinois, New York and the UK, in addition to numerous private collections. Locally you can see some of her work in the University of Washington Library Book Arts Collection and the Cynthia Sears Artist Book Collection at the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art.
