As book artist and excavator, Cindy Luxhoj never tires of the wonder of a book in its many forms and transformations. First intrigued by excavation as an art form when marveling at a piece by James Allen* at the 2018 Sitka Art Invitational in Portland, Oregon, she wanted to understand it and make it her own. Curious, Cindy reached out to James to inquire if he was willing to share his techniques.
In this talk, Cindy will take participants on a book excavation journey, which started with a private virtual lesson for a nominal fee with James Allen. Since that pivotal event, she has been enthusiastically adapting and expanding the technique, and exploring her own style, fascinated by the unique possibilities that each new book presents. Book excavation, sometimes referred to as book archaeology, requires patience, creative thought, and countless X-acto blades, but is well worth the effort. Cindy is excited by the endless discovery this art form presents and eager to share her adventures with fellow book artists.
A little about the artist/excavator:
Cindy’s childhood love of books has transformed in recent years to an obsession with hand bookbinding and book arts. Excavations, although her current focus, are just one of her many explorations. Book making combines technical precision with creative freedom, exercising both brain hemispheres, in a delightful way. What is hidden between two covers or encased in an outer shell expands to reveal, yet collapses into a neat package to be rediscovered anew. While all her work to date has been for her own enjoyment, Cindy welcomes occasions to create with like-minded book art enthusiasts and is open to accepting commissions or participating in custom projects should the opportunity arise.
